Solar Thermal Heating Solutions
At JR Waddell & Son Ltd, we believe that the future of heating lies in clean, renewable energy. As energy costs continue to rise and environmental concerns grow, more homeowners are turning to solar thermal technology as a reliable and sustainable solution. Solar Thermal Heating allows you to capture the sun’s natural energy and transform it into hot water for your home — helping you save money while reducing your carbon footprint.
By investing in solar energy, you’re not only securing long-term savings on your fuel bills, but also taking an important step towards a greener future. With the right system in place, you can enjoy free, renewable energy for years to come, knowing you’re contributing to a more sustainable planet.
Solar Thermal Heating Services in Detail
How Solar Thermal Heating Works
- Collectors: Panels on your roof, called collectors, absorb heat from the sun. These work throughout the day, even in overcast weather. The heat is transferred to a fluid (usually a mix of water and antifreeze) circulating through the panels.
- Heat Transfer: This heated fluid is then pumped through a coil in your hot water cylinder. The heat from the coil transfers to the water inside the cylinder.
- Storage: The hot water is stored in the insulated cylinder, ready for you to use.
There are two main types of solar thermal collectors:
Flat Plate Collectors: These are the more common and affordable option. They consist of a dark absorber plate in an insulated, weatherproof box with a glass or plastic cover.
Evacuated Tube Collectors: These are more efficient, especially in colder climates, and consist of a series of glass tubes. Each tube contains an absorber plate and a heat pipe in a vacuum, which significantly reduces heat loss. They are more expensive but can be a better choice if roof space is limited.
The Benefits of Solar Thermal Energy
- Hot Water Throughout the Year: The system provides hot water all year round, although a backup system will be needed more frequently in the winter.
- Reduced Energy Bills: Sunlight is free, so you'll see a noticeable reduction in your hot water costs. Depending on your current heating fuel, you could save between £50 and £95 per year.
- Lower Carbon Footprint: Solar thermal is a green, renewable heating system that can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 570kg per year, depending on the fuel you are replacing.
- Low Maintenance: Once installed, solar thermal systems require very little maintenance. A yearly visual check and a more thorough inspection by an accredited installer every 3-5 years is usually all that is needed.
